The proceedings of the Inaugural Symposium of the International Community (Koinon) of Academies, held in Athens from February 9-10, 2026, with the participation of representatives from academies around the world, concluded successfully.
During the Symposium, a series of lectures was delivered, followed by open and closed-door discussions among the representatives of the member academies of the International Koinon. The International Community of Academies currently includes representatives of thirty-eight (38) academies from across the globe as Honorary Members, and three (3) additional academies participating as observers.
A defining feature of this union of intellectual institutions is its commitment to promoting interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, and inter-field dialogue among the sciences, humanities, and the arts, particularly in the era of artificial intelligence. The activities of the International Community of Academies will continue in the coming years through annual thematic meetings and the organization of a major Symposium every four years, following the model established by the inaugural meeting held in Athens.
The proceedings of the Inaugural Symposium concluded with a presentation by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens on the history of the archaeological excavations and related works at the site of Plato’s Academy.
During a closed session of the Symposium, the International Community of Academies was formally constituted in accordance with the procedures laid out in its founding statute. Upon the proposal of many members and by the unanimous decision of the academy representatives, Academician Christos Zerefos was elected as the first President of the International Community of Academies.
As part of the Symposium program, on Wednesday, February 11, members of the International Community of Academies will visit the sacred site of Delphi, where the official program of events will conclude.
